1. Substrate Formulation

To ensure optimal growth of Hericium erinaceus, the following substrate formulations can be used:

  • Formula 1: 78% hardwood sawdust, 20% wheat bran or fine rice bran, 1% gypsum, 1% sucrose.
  • Formula 2: 45% hardwood sawdust, 40% corn cob, 10% wheat bran or fine rice bran, 2% corn flour, 1% soybean flour, 1% gypsum, 0.5-1% lime, 0.5-1% sucrose.
  • Formula 3: 90% cottonseed hulls, 8% wheat bran or fine rice bran, 1% gypsum, 1% sucrose.

During cultivation, the substrate moisture content should be maintained at 55%-60%, with a pH range of 5.5-6.5.

2. Environmental Control

Stage Temperature Humidity Light CO₂
Mycelial 25-28℃ 60-70% Dark <5,000ppm
Fruiting 15-22℃ 85-95% 200-400lx <1,000ppm
  • Temperature:

    • Mycelial growth: 12-34°C, optimal 25-28°C.
    • Fruiting body formation: 14-25°C, optimal 15-22°C.
  • Humidity:

    • Mycelial growth thrives at 60%-70% relative humidity.
    • Fruiting bodies develop best at 85%-95% relative humidity. If humidity falls below 60%, the fruiting bodies shrink and turn yellow. If it exceeds 95%, abnormal fruiting body formation may occur.
  • Light:

    • Primordium formation requires a minimum of 50 lux of light.
    • Normal fruiting body development needs sufficient illumination of 200-400 lux.
  • Air Exchange:

    • Mycelium can tolerate high carbon dioxide concentrations, up to 5000 ppm.
    • During fruiting, carbon dioxide concentration should not exceed 1000 ppm to ensure normal growth.

By carefully managing these factors, growers can cultivate healthy and high-yielding Hericium erinaceus. With the right approach, this remarkable mushroom can thrive, offering both nutritional and commercial benefits.
